Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I was this excited to unbox a product that was about to be put through the wringer in a fully-detailed, multi-segment, no holds barred Gadget Guru hands-on review.

Conducting a proper and fair review requires time and patience. I’m a believer in the theory: “if you’re going to do something, do it right,” and that’s my plan with the OSMO. While I’m not reviewing the vast quantity of new products I did back in the days I had a large staff (after all, I’m supposed to be retired these days), I’m quite selective on the ones I select to personally use and review. That’s because in this day and age of instant opinions and reviews, I’m still an old school guy who understands the difference between a review and an overview and these things take time to do right. And that’s my goal with taking DJI’s new OSMO camera/handheld stabilizer through my review process.

So, why am I so excited about getting to know the OSMO? I enjoy using video cameras as well as the entire production process that takes place with the captured footage. But let’s face it, there’s really not that many truly new offerings in cameras today. Maybe that’s because most people use smartphones or GoPro models to capture footage and the results that come from these devices are noteworthy. This is why I’m looking forward to putting the OSMO through its paces over the next few weeks as it’s simply different from other offerings.

Yes, there’s other compact handheld stabilizers readily available, but most of them are designed to work with GoPro cameras and they are just okay. What captured my attention about the OSMO is that DJI has done a respectable job with its lineup of quad- and multi-rotor-copters that all use sophisticated gimbal mechanisms to deliver stabilized video while soaring through the air. While its copters have room for improvement, it’s gimbal technology seems to get better with every generation.

What made unboxing DJI’s newest product, the OSMO special was that although I had seen the images of this handheld stabilizer on DJI’s website, I had never seen one up close and personal nor held one in my hand. While the photos and early overviews displayed an interesting product, I had no idea of the build quality, if the buttons were laid out in an ergonomic manner and the quality of the video it produces. Yes, I knew it would be shipping with an unusually shaped carrying case that was billed as being the worlds smallest violin case, but I’m going into this review knowing little else about this product.

I’m hoping to produce a number of videos of the various features of DJI’s OSMO over the next few weeks and I hope you stay tuned. With that said, here’s my official unboxing video!
