Why Is The PicoMic So Good? – New Firmware, Better Sound, More Features
PicoMic In October 2019, I published a review and video about PicoGear’s PicoMic system. My bottom line was that while there was a lot to like about this two-channel 2.4GHz wireless microphone, there was room for improvement. That review can be found here: https://youtu.be/D3or46y2duU
A new video that highlights the improvements of PicoGear’s 2.4GHz, dual channel wireless microphone system can be found at the bottom of this page.
Being a relatively small company with the ability to pivot, the folks at PicoGear took user input seriously and recently introduced firmware changes that enhanced both the user experience and sound quality to the point that I’m now putting a buy recommendation on this $450 microphone.
If you’re not familiar with this system, here’s an overview. The PicoStream (pictured above) is a receiver designed to attach to a camera’s cold shoe mount as well as connect to a phone or tablet. It nests two tiny microphones called PicoMics (pictured below). But, don’t let the small size fool you as each rechargeable microphone can last up to 20 hours (depending on distance) per charge.
However, there’s a problem and it appears they are addressing this one as we speak.
Speaking of distance, you’ll need to check out the video below as I was surprised at how far it could carry a signal without interference. Through multiple tests I found it to be more reliable in longer ranges than RODE’s popular Wireless GO system.
Other than being a great solution for two person interviews, another advantage the PicoStream has over competitors is that it’s easily upgradable via a firmware download. The recent 2.0 firmware brought numerous improvements to the interface, cable connections and most importantly sound quality. The upgrades are discussed in the video and since a PicoMic was used throughout the video, you can be the judge when it comes to sound quality.
However, there’s a problem and it appears they are addressing this one as we speak.
Buying a Pico system has not been easy as ever since they were introduced in 2019, they typically sell out within the day they are posted. Per the PicoGear rep, additional inventory will be hitting their website in July that should satisfy much of the demand.
